What form shall I assume
to best serve the forces
of
light and goodness?
hen selecting your character in Diablo, there is no rolling
of dice, no roster of pregenerated characters to choose from, and so on.
Choose the type of character you want to play (Warrior, Rogue, or
Sorcerer), and your attributes are automatically selected.
There are four traits that make up each player character: strength,
magic, dexterity, and vitality. Each player class has a specific trait
that is its calling card. Obviously, magic is the most necessary trait
for Sorcerers, for Warriors it's strength, and for Rogues it's
dexterity. Vitality is the overall physical condition of the character,
much like the constitution trait in Dungeons & Dragons, and it is
crucial to all player characters.
As you accumulate experience points, your level rises. With each new
level attained, you are given five additional points to distribute among
your attributes. How should they be distributed, you ask? Easy: it
depends.
When playing in single-player mode, particularly in the lower levels,
it is important to distribute your points evenly. While strength may be
the hallmark of the Warrior, having a high enough magic ability to heal
yourself can and will mean the difference between life and death. If
your Sorcerer is out of spell-casting mana, you need to be able to pack
a decent physical punch.
In multiplayer mode, particularly when playing with a trusted group,
the strategy is different. The first goal should be to up your primary
statistic, and then your vitality, with the exception of the Sorcerer.
The Sorcerer's Mana Shield spell makes him less susceptible to the
disadvantages of a low vitality. If you are playing Rogue, leave the
brute force to the Warrior while you sharpen your skills with the bow.
The combined talents of the group will be much stronger if all players
are depended upon to perform special tasks as well as possible.
Since each character class does have its own unique abilities,
strategies for playing them differ.
